At the 1974 Annual General Meeting of the Albion Amateur Athletic Club, it was voted that the club change it's name to the Sunshine Amateur Athletic Club to associate with the City of Sunshine rather than a suburb of that City. The club was still affiliated with the Albion Football Sports Club.

In 1983, the Albion Women's Amateur Athletic Club and the Sunshine Amateur Athletic amalgamated forming the Sunshine Athletic Club.

When the club formed, the life members of the formation clubs became life members of the Sunshine Athletic Club.

In 1994, the Sunshine Athletic Club merged with the Footscray Athletic Club and the Werribee Athletic Club to form Western Athletics.  Western Athletic has gone on to be one of the premier clubs in the State.
