After World War 2, many Sunshine teenagers found entertainment whiling away the hours for entertainment feeding loose change into the jukebox at Homewood’s Café.

Next door to the Sunshine Memorial Town Hall in Hampshire Road the big brightly lit café attracted large crowds and was very popular during the weekly Saturday night dances run by popular hairdresser Ern Davis. Probably the brightest feature in the café was the popular jukebox.

The cafe at 107 - 109 Hampshire Road was ideally located for the purpose being situated in the social centre of Sunshine surrounded by George Kirby’s Sunshine Theatre, the Town Hall and the Masonic Hall. It was also passed daily by crowds of school students on their way to and from school and it was a mecca for servicemen on leave during World War 2 when it was commonplace to enter the café` to the strains of Marlene Dietrich singing “Lili Marlene” and other wartime favourites jauntily streaming from the jukebox.

Before the war the popular venue was in the capable hands of the Hellyer family but during the early 1940s the reins passed to Mrs. S. Homewood but it retained its awesome popularity with Mrs. Homewood in control. As a result it was regularly referred to as both Helyer’s Café and Homewood’s Café depending on which generation was reminiscing.

The jukebox phenomenon was born when in 1928 a player piano maker, Justus P. Seeburg, combined an electronic loudspeaker with a coin operated record player to introduce the jukebox as we know it using a mechanism patented in 1918 for automatically changing records. Later versions included Seeburg’s invention of a jukebox with 10 turntables mounted vertically on a spindle allowing the customer to manoeuvre the mechanical arm to select from 10 different records. As electronic recording and amplification improved there was greater demand for coin operated phonographs so more sophisticated automation was introduced into jukeboxes as well. Styling progressed from plain wooden boxes in the early 1930s to eye.

The shops at 107 - 109 Hampshire Road next to the old townhall have been demolished and their former sites are now part of the R.T. Pollard Gardens.

In the 1960's, this section of Hampshire Road was renamed to Sun Crescent.
