The Braybrook Junction Railway Station opened on the 7th September 1885 after the new branch line to Ballarat connected to the existing Bendigo line at Braybrook.

The station was later renamed to Sunshine in 1908 after the Sunshine Harvester Works.

​

On Easter Monday 20th April 1908, the station was the site of Australia's worst train disaster when a Melbourne bound train from Bendigo collided with the rear of a train from Ballarat. In the accident 44 people were killed and over 400 people injured.
